Friday’s Brain Dump

Brain Dump

Wherein one opens the connection from brain to fingers and just starts typing. Green grammar line of doom be damned.

The Red spelling line of death, however, is to be respected.

It’s Friday!

No finished projects for me to show off for you this week. My mother’s poor shawl keeps being forgotten in my car. I swear it’s not intentional.

It’s ok because I’m reading A Wild Sheep Chase by Murakami. I am loving it. I want to finish it as much as I don’t want it to end. What a contrast to Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series!

If Moning is like corn dogs and soda with a dash of cotton candy, Murakami is like perfectly cooked lamb with a gorgeous wine and a chocolate mousse. His writing is the kind of thing that makes you stop and take it in even though you really just want to inhale it. He gets your brain going in weird ways. He opens up the pensive thing big time. This is the exact same thing I experienced when I read The wind up bird chronicles.

I’m trying to resist starting another book until I finish my mom’s way overdue shawl. This shawl is definitely a nudge to stick to crochet. I just can’t get into it like I do with crochet and it’s damn slow.

If I do start another book, it’ll either be How to live safely in a science fiction universe or The lacuna. I’ve been feeling particularly geeky lately so I’m leaning towards the former.

I’m working on mellowing. I’m working on telling my brain to shut up. I’m working on gratitude. If I fill my mind with happy thoughts, the bad ones won’t be so overwhelming right? They’re not fake happy thoughts, so they should count for something.

Ex is slowly ramping up child support payments. Of course it’s not where I’d like it to be but it’s better than where it’s been the past few months and it’s way better than nothing. At least at this point, he’s paying enough to help me close the gap between income and expenses much better.

I really do hope to be completely independent of his payments in about 18 months. By getting to that state, I’d be able to really put my money to work and build a savings so the kids could have future expenses covered. I’m thinking braces and cars and college and who knows what else. More importantly, a huge stressor would be removed.

I’m making a conscious effort to do more of the little things that make me smile and feel good even on the most superficial level.

This includes things like painting my nails. I don’t bother with manicures as they’re too costly and I always chip them anyways. But I can throw some paint on myself right?

I’m leaving now to go to Daughter’s ballet show. I hope you have a fantastic weekend. Must buy her flowers!

Stay happy my friends.

  1. Hurray to telling your brain who’s boss.

The sheep book sounds awesome..been back to reading lately and I’m looking for a few good reads. I’m amazed that my giant stack that just collected dust for a couple of years is all gone and read.

  2. Yes, smile and laugh and do something nice for you every day. And if you’re going to read, The Velveteen Rabbit is good too. 🙂

“What is REAL?” asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying side by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room. “Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?”

“Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but really loves you, then you become Real.”

“Does it hurt?” asked the Rabbit.

“Sometimes,” said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. “When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.”

“Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,” he asked, “or bit by bit?”

“It doesn’t happen all at once,” said the Skin Horse. “You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”
