Get out of my house chaos

Ugh I hate when it feels like Chaos has moved in and made herself quite comfortable in your house and nothing you do makes it go away.

We’ve been living in our new home for a month and a half and my mother has suggested many times that my grandparents are dying to come over and check out the new place which makes sense and really shouldn’t be a problem because they DID give us some cash to help buy the place. So I decided that I’d have a little thing for the family here on Saturday since we have Easter things Sunday. Well, of COURSE that means we have to run around and get this place into decent shape. As for what I’m doing? Well I took a page from Domino, no really, and am just going to have a beautiful cheese platter and complementary “tapas” and wine. Something to just munch on and easy to prep and clean.

So tomorrow the crew we had to end up hiring is coming to do our staircase and landing. It’s about damn time. UGH we’ve been so frustrated with that project and yes we have to pay to get it done now which we weren’t counting on but really at this point WHO CARES?

I need to get the dining room in shape which meant that first of all Mario’s train table needed to go upstairs into his room. This meant that his room needed big time rearranging and even decluttering. I somehow bribed my little brothers into coming over today and the youngest one was with me for 45 minutes or so shoving furniture around the room, complaining about pregnant women, and (I think) trying to kill me with his death ray laser eye beams. But at least his room looks really great now as far as placement goes. It still needs to be painted and such but it’ll wait. At least I can put this up tomorrow. I freaked when I saw it at Target for only $20 since I last saw it on art.com for $40. I was, however, sad, when the matching rocket had only one left and it’s frame was broken. Must go to another Target!!

Also, the only bathtub in the house is in my son’s bathroom and has had a very slow drain since we moved in. We bought this super happy terrific will burn the skin off your hands liquid thing and tried it like 3 times and nothing. So it looks like we have to snake the damn thing and then at some point call in a plumber if that doesn’t work. This has me very bummed because it’s impossible to really clean a bathtub with a slow drain and if you’ve had one, you know what I mean. So his bathtub is pretty yucky and makes me mad. We’ll see what the heck happens tomorrow with that. I might just give it a once over with some magic reach.

Ok and then there’s the armoire. My in-laws gave us a very nice cherry wood armoire for our bedroom. My husband and his father were unable to get it upstairs because it was so heavy. So I bribed those brothers of mine over today and they attacked it. And it won. It’s in our garage now and will be going back to the inlaws. This also makes me sad as our bedroom is so UGLY right now. Do you know what our nightstands are? Cardboard boxes. Our tv and stuff is sitting on a wicker stand that can’t handle much more of a load. The good news is that Target has a line of furniture I want and it’s on sale this week at the stores. I just don’t think we’ll have it all set up for Saturday. Actually, I’m like 90% sure. Maybe 95%.

I have to focus on what I *can* get done and what *needs* to get done and not worry so much about the other crap. And then there’s stuff I want to do because it’s FUN stuff.

NEED
Finish grocery shopping
Finish the dining room because that’s where the food is going
Quick clean up
Fix up the yard a bit

WANT
Knit more of that baby blanket
Try that freezer paper stencil that’s all over the blogosphere right now
Dye Easter Eggs for a simple centerpiece
Break out supplies and make more ATC’s for trade

And now for a quick show of the good things in my life today 🙂

These egg-shaped bowls are just delightful with that little detail up front. I got these at Target for $8 a pop and there’s a surprise when you look inside…

I LOVE the silhouette style lately. I’ve been feeling it for the past year or so and if it’s a silhoutte chances are I want it. OOOOOOOH ATC idea. Must make a note of that.

Speaking of ATC’s, I’m doing a quick little Easter Egg swap with some scrapbooking friends and one of them sent me this as a hostess gift. It’s so totally rad and I knew a few of you would dig it. The cards are gorgeous and I don’t want to cover them up!!

My bulletin board is celebrating Spring and Easter. I made the pom pom flowers during a crafty afternoon with Mario and the postcard came with these FANTASTIC “chocolate” bunnies that Jen at Red Instead enabled me to buy.

It’s a new month. Yellow and Orange for Project Spectrum. How fun- I just wonder if I’ll be able to contribute something this time around.

Saturday night I finished the first square of the baby blanket. It’s not perfect but I can’t expect it to be. I didn’t start until today on the second square because things have been a little hectic and sad and weird with the death of my grandaunt. Also, work has been busy and so my two hands that WOULD be knitting are busy typing and dialing and writing instead. I would really like to make some serious progress on this blanket. There’s a pillow I want to make a friend of mine and that I can make for Project Spectrum this month but I don’t want to pick it up until I’ve made a good dent in this blanket. I have a few more Pom Pom animals I’d like to make and then unleash them on the world to some friends. And I’m dying to try Bella Dia’s Pom Pom Tutorial.

Just for fun, here are a couple things that make me smile.

The First Square
It’s not perfect but it’s soft and the color is SO perfect. Now, we just need eleven more!!

The Bowl on My Desk
I picked it up at Target to hold some magnets for my new board but it was so pretty, I didn’t want the magnets cluttering it. So not it’s just sitting there making me smile.

As promised, I’m going to go ahead and throw lots of yummy pictures and links your way. These are my favorite posts to read on other blogs and so I’m returning the favor. Since my desk is sort of transient right now, and a crafting space nonexistent, I really use the internet as my inspiration and my blog and the blogs of others as a sort of inspiration board. So here we go.

First off, the knitting books.

Knitting For Baby
is truly gorgeous. More important to me is that it is highly motivational because it features really beautiful projects that shouldn’t be difficult. I’m going to enlist the help of my SIL and work on the patchwork baby blanket. I can do garter stitch squares! I’ll let you know how it turns out but it’s definitely at the top of my project list.

World of Knitted Toys
by Kath Dalmeny is really cute and fun-looking but kinda makes me nervous. My being a complete newbie knitter, the patterns make kinda glaze over and ask, “Huh?” The book claims the seal is the easiest toy to complete so that will be my first project from the book. I’ll let you know how that goes.

Speaking of knitting, let me update you on that whole um thing. Right now, I’m mostly in search of practice although now that I have found two projects I really want to do- the seal and blanket, I’m still sticking to practicing with the scarves. And if it’s a practice piece, it’s a Project Spectrum Piece. I initially had no plans other than the Stitch n Bitch Ribbed For Her Pleasure scarf for my practice piece. The thing is, I was getting so frustrated with it, I wanted to do something easier to lift my spirits a bit while I worked on it. So I grabbed some super bulky yarn and my gigantic needles and just started cranking out a simple simple garter stitch scarf. That one is ten times further along than the ribbed one but hey I’m trying not to give up.

My very first package of fun stuff to my new address came in over the weekend. Theresa at CraftyCorner sent me one of her really beautiful Departed Souls Trading Cards and CD. I love the idea of sending an ATC as a trading card with a sticker and a stick of gum. It’s so great. And cute little envelope for it too!! Everything about her package is so personal, it really was special getting it from her so thank you so much Theresa. Your little prince will make his way to you soon I promise!!

I don’t think I’ve mentioned before how much I love vinyl toys. It all started with my love of things Japanese and the vinyl toys out right now you can tell really derive from that influence. Anyways, my boss knows about my fixation and on one of our trips to New York I dragged him to Kidrobot. That store is just heavenly. It pops with colors and makes me drool a lot. Anyways, it’s become a habit that every time he goes to NY, he pops in and buys me one of their Dunnys. These are the last two he brought back for me. The yellow is from the limited edition Los Angeles series and the green is from the new 2 faced series. He has two faces but the one I photographed is my favorite.

Speaking of shopping, which I do quite often, I discovered some stores that also leave me salivating. The first two I actually found in an issue of Lucky magazine that I somehow missed before. The third I found thanks to Shim + Sons. If you have a chance and you love bright colors and bold graphics you’ll want to check out the following:

Juice Planning
has some REALLY cute stuff like bags and trays and stationery items. They’re all in that really bright Japanese heavy pattern style I adore.

Little Odd Forest
is similar but has a lot more to offer and for me, it’s ALL about their bags and tees. I’m not too crazy about their home stuff but I also haven’t looked at it too hard because I can’t stop drooling over their bags.

ReproDepot
is one of those sites that makes me physically itch for a sewing machine and someone to teach me how to use the thing. It also makes me wish I had walls and walls of fabric like this at my disposal. I want to stretch some of their fabric over canvas and hang it on my walls and the others I want to make into soft blankets, or towels, or throws, or even skirts and dresses. Some of those would make GREAT purses too.

Also, just for fun. I have a Yoshitomo Nara calendar above my computer. Check out the March image. I love her.

Just a list of things

I have so much crafty news to update with and although they really should have pictures attached, I’m just too beat up to take pictures right now so I’ll list them now and make a nicer update tomorrow when I’m a little more recovered than I am right now from an event I worked yesterday.

* Friday I got two new knitting books in the mail. This is quickly turning into an obsession for one big reason: Portability. I got Knitting For Baby by Melanie Falick and Kristin Nicholas and I got World of Knitted Toys which isn’t right next to me so I can’t give the rest of the relevant information on it.

* The Ribbed For Her Pleasure scarf is coming along but very slowly. To make myself feel better, and to redeem the first ucky ucky ucky scarf I made, I picked up some Lion’s Brand Boucle yarn in this crazy varied color yarn that has reds and pinks in it as I am continuously inspired by Project Spectrum. THAT one is coming along a LOT faster and makes me smile.

* I got a beautiful package from Snowbear in the mail today– well yesterday. It’s one of her day of the dead atc’s and just made me drool everywhere. Or maybe it was the gum that did it.

* There are some online stores I am in love with for the simple reason that looking at them makes me smile: ReproDepot, JuicePlanning, and LittleOddForest. I’ll provide links tomorrow I PROMISE.

Anyways, my body is screaming at me as is the husband (something about my cell phone). I am going to make my way upstairs and take a hot shower. After that is anyone’s guess. Maybe I’ll work on one of the scarves.

Books and Books

Are you ready for this? I’ve never really bought any craft books. Not any good serious ones where I’ve done my research first and then jumped in. And mostly it was because I didn’t know where to begin until I thought of Amazon. I now have a wishlist on Amazon and a good percentage of the books are craft books. Here are some of the ones I’m really jonesing for. If you have any of these, I’d love to hear your input on them.
